If you want to be successful, at some point you will have to choose to give yourself some credit. It always amazes me how many people shy away from credit, pats on the back, deflect compliments, and so forth. You are an amazing person that make a million great tiny decisions per day; making you the person, professional, mom/dad, husband/wife, etc. you are. Your success will be found in your decisions… but first in your language!
Most people minimize themselves and their choices by stating, “I had to…” whatever it is you had to do. “I had to pick the kids up”. “I had to get that second job to make ends meet”. “I had to take over the game in order to win, or the office decision to close the deal”. The truth is… you didn’t and don’t have to do anything. YOU chose to do it… and your continued decisions to do what is right, necessary, and beneficial for you, your family, and your life is a big deal and needs to be celebrated.
Secondly, what if you transform your language… allowing you to EVOLVE with gratitude and perspective? Instead of “I have to”… try… “I get to”. Not many people are in your position and would trade with you in a heartbeat for what you have, who you are with, where you live, etc. “Tonight, I get to take my kids to basketball practice” sounds a bit better than “I have to…”. More importantly it positively impacts your brain… formulating a more positive thought, leading to a more positive feeling, more positive behavior, and more positive consequence. People with miserable attitudes were not born that way… it was a series of negatives and constant negative thinking, leading to negative feelings, behaviors, stemming to ongoing negative consequences that keeps the wheel spinning.
Yes, this is will be odd and at times ludacris to apply… while you may be cleaning toilets or preparing dinner for the 16th million time, but what do you have to lose compared to what you will gain?
