Let’s just jump into it… I remember speaking with a friend of mine years ago… he and his wife just had their first baby and were in the tornado of transition! He made a statement that has stayed with me and inspired me ever since… “I love my wife, but I sure do miss my girlfriend”. So simple, yet so powerful!
Remember meeting your significant other… the sparks, the intrigue, the fun, the intimacy. Falling in love is chemically compared to the rush of drugs and addiction. The intensity and wonder of it all is breath-taking. As time passes and the honeymoon period wains… things come back to a more normal and level state. There is something to be said for being comfortable with your partner and the reality of love instead of the feeling of falling in love. Some need to chase the high and struggle to settle for comfortable. As you add the title of husband or wife; along comes a host of conscious and unconscious expectations of that role for yourself and your partner. As you add the title of mom and dad; here are more conscious and unconscious expectations. In time, here comes the schedules, add on busy, multiply exhaustion, and jobs, and dishes, and grass, and homework… Oh My!
My friend did not speak ill of his wife or her as a mother… he said something powerful… that she was more than a wife and mother… he missed her… as many women may miss him. It becomes easy to lose yourself given all the roles you have acquired and demote yourself, your relationship, and the needs of your partner for the noble cause of treading water with working, parenting, and the duties of the day… but YOU are important and YOU is what your partner misses and needs. Of course you will grow and change and YOU may be a bit different, but remember to make time and take time to gift your partner with YOU!
